What to eat when working out

What you eat when working out is as important as the workout itself. Whether your workout is for losing weight, strengthening your muscles or just to keep fit, the proper diet regime is important for the successful achievement of your goals.  Eating the right foods and in the right quantities can energize your body for the best out of your workout, sustain your body during the workout and compliment your workout without undoing the effects of your workout after. Certain foods give a particular effect and when paired with your workout at the right intervals ensures that you get the best out of your body.

Before your work out
This is when you prepare your body for what might be the most vigorous work it will do for the day. it is therefore important that your body is energized so that neither hunger nor thirst will slow or stop your workout altogether. Most important are fluids, as they help your body to remain hydrated. Dehydration does not only slow down your workout but it can have adverse effects on the body. For energy, muscle and blood cell preparation your body will need fats, carbohydrates and proteins. Your muscles will be doing a lot of work and would need to get that energy from food to function. Blood cells will be pumping the oxygen your body will be using a lot of during your workout. Oxygen helps your muscles to work and to allow air to pass through your body. Proteins support your muscles and blood cells for your workout.

During your workout
It is not wise to have any heavy meals less than two hours before your workout. However to ensure that your body does not become dehydrated it is prescribed that water is good for you during your workout. Water also cools the body down and gives you that boost of energy during workouts. For longer workouts it is recommended that you drink sports drinks as they contain sodium and carbohydrates as well as the benefits that you would get from water. This helps your body to function at its best without breaking down during the workout.

After your workout
Protein helps your muscles to recover from your workout, so a meal comprised of proteins is best for after your workout. After your workout your hard working muscles will be healing and growing and you all want to be in a good condition to continually workout on a regular basis. Proteins help your muscles to recuperate and also to grow and this means any type of protein whether it’s from meat, animal by product, wheat or peas and beans.
